- Abstract
- The proponents of transhumanism seek to overcome humanity's biological limitations. The motivation for merging human biology with technology to overcome disease, aging, and even death is not entirely evil. Transhumanists correctly assert that humankind was made for more. As can be demonstrated through the words of sacred scripture and two millennia of Catholic thought and scholarship, humankind is indeed made for more, and that transcendence is an authentic human desire; however, the means by which transhumanists seek to advance the human species is worth discussion. Before humanity at large attempts to make substantial changes to what defines the human being, it is crucial for Christians to not only be aware of the specter of transhumanism and what transhumanists seek to accomplish it is imperative that we be able to address the issue in light of the Christian faith and the views of Christian theological anthropology. Transhumanists believe we can change many things that negatively affect people worldwide through our intellect and the tools of science and technology. As Roman Catholics, we have a responsibility to remind the world of what it truly means to be human and that we are not merely material beings with unlimited autonomy. The fact that we are creatures created by God and not the creator is crucial in discussing are quickly advancing technological future. It is crucial for Catholics to be exposed to these ideas and to begin the process of wrestling with them rather than ignoring the temperature rising as we sit as the proverbial frog in the pot.
